Psychology students find class hypnotizing

His head hung down as though he had nodded off in class. His eyes were closed.
Gracefully, William Hathorn moved his left hand through the air.

For several minutes, the Orchard View High School student seemed oblivious to the bemused stares of his classmates. Temporarily forgotten were the everyday stresses of school work, parental expectations and a desire to be socially accepted.

Hathorn was in a deep state of hypnosis.

Relaxing the Rule

Waves softly pound a rhythmic island beat against white sand dazzling under a cloudless sky. A warm and gentle breeze smells sweet, carries pleasant music and softly caresses Susanne Giller’s skin. Stretched out in a chaise longue, the 33-year-old is serene and worlds away from all stress and tension. “I have a drink in my hand,” she adds.

The Hopewell Township woman was in paradise — not as a result of frequent-flier miles or winning a contest. She reached the imaginary place through self-hypnosis — and did so while in labor, opting for the self-induced state over pain medication to deliver a healthy baby boy, her first child, after four hours of labor.

Study: Hypnosis Works to Treat Hospitalized Smokers

Patients who are hospitalized may be more likely to quit smoking with the help of hypnotherapy, according to researchers.

A study, conducted by the North Shore Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital in Salem, Mass., found that more patients were likely to quit smoking after six months, compared to patients who used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or those who wanted to quit on their own, which is known as going “cold turkey.” Researhers also found that patients who were admitted to the hospital with cardiac disease were three times more likely to quit smoking than those with pulmonary (lung) problems.

Hypnotists Gather to Promote Technique

A shady character slowly swings a pocket watch in front of a person’s face as the subject gets sleepier and sleepier, falls into a trance and, against his will, struts like a chicken on command. That’s how hypnotism traditionally has been portrayed in old movies and television shows, but real life does not imitate art.

Visualize Success

Hypnotherapist Bonnie Katlun didn’t make any Union High School students bark like dogs Wednesday, but she admitted she has altered her own dog’s state of consciousness to see if she could.

Native Americans use a process called “gentling” to stroke horses into an alpha state. Then there are cobras “charmed” out of their baskets, which Katlun hasn’t tried. “It’s rhythmic and getting them to focus, which was a challenge with my dog.”

Her hypnosis is not the stagy sideshow staple, but guided meditation to a deep state of relaxation where the subconscious can be put to work solving problems
