Heal thyself – Alternative medicine merits closer attention

This is a story about a medical puzzle. It involves a very successful research physician and his father, a dentist who was also a hypnotist. It also involves the research physician’s wife, who is suffering from ovarian cancer.

I am writing this story because I am truly mystified by the doctor, who I will call David. I met him and his wife a few weeks ago at a dinner party. We got talking about medical issues. He did his training at Harvard, and my husband, who was at the table too, mentioned that I had been treated at Dana Farber, a Harvard-affiliated hospital, for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

David asked me how long I had been healthy, and I told him five or six years and he gave me a big smile and a thumbs up. As we proceeded to dine on barbecued chicken and string beans and orzo salad, David told one amazing story about his father the dentist.

Hypnosis helps ease childbirth

There’s nothing like the fear and anxiety of the first-time mom about to deliver her first baby.

Unless it’s the second-time mom haunted by a traumatic first delivery.

“I think I had more fear, because I knew how bad it could be and I knew how I felt the last time, wanting to have a natural birth and not having it because I had an epidural, and feeling disappointed in myself,” says Jes Elliott of Edmonton.

“The worst part was the recovery. It was really, really long, because the delivery was really, really long.”

Elliott and her husband, Todd Unger, had taken a prenatal class to help prepare them for the birth of their son Toby, who is now three, but it didn’t really help them, she says.

“What we learned was very generic. I just didn’t have any skills to draw on, no action plan.”

By the time Toby was delivered, “the joy of having the baby was completely gone,” Elliott remembers.

She wasn’t going to go through that again, so when Elliott became pregnant a second time, the yoga teacher contacted Caroline Stewart, a hypnobirthing educator at From Within Wellness Centre.

Why is weight loss such a struggle?

The American public spends millions maybe even billions on
weight loss every year. A quick search of Amazon.com using the word “diet”
reveals over 300,000 books related to this subject. At almost any time on any
day turn on the TV and you’ll find a commercial selling a product for weight
loss. There are all kinds of diets or diet programs; high protein diets, low
fat diets, grapefruit diets, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. And now, we’re
into surgery to try to lose weight. With so much information about how to lose
weight, why is America in the throes of an obesity epidemic?

We know what it takes to lose weight at the physical
level. Simply take in fewer calories than you burn each day. Simple isn’t it?
Yeah right! If it’s so simple then why do most people on a diet gain back their
weight in less than a year? Because the physical side of losing weight is only
half the equation, that’s why.

The other half of the equation is the mental side. People
who struggle to lose weight quite often have a fat person’s mental image of
themselves. At the subconscious level they still see themselves as fat. It
doesn’t matter if they’ve lost that extra weight or not. Subconsciously, they
still believe that they are overweight. And, as anyone who has studied the mind
recognizes, whatever the mind holds as a belief, the mind will physically
create. To the dieter’s subconscious, the weight loss is only a temporary state
of affairs. As soon as the dieter either loses vigilance maintaining their diet
or tires of the constant battle to remain thin, the subconscious then takes over
and recreates the physical body to match the overweight image the subconscious
maintains.

So what is the solution? Simple, change the way the mind
views the physical body. Change the subconscious image of the dieter’s body to
match the slim attractive body the dieter desires. Once a new image is created
in the subconscious, the power of the subconscious mind is now working with the
dieter to easily create the slim attractive body they desire.

What’s the best way to change a subconscious image? The
best way to change a person’s image of themselves is through hypnosis or
self-hypnosis. Either method provides a way of accessing the subconscious and
changing the beliefs and self-images that make dieting such a struggle. If
you’re tired of battling your weight, if you’re tired of yo-yo dieting, if
you’re fed up with being over weight, give hypnosis a try in conjunction with
your diet. I think you’ll be quite pleased with the results.

Back to School

Now that its time school again, I’d like to spend a quick
moment and talk about how hypnosis can benefit students.

The first way is to reduce test anxiety. When a student
has test anxiety, it can be a very frustrating. It doesn’t seem to matter how
hard or long they study, they still end up freezing during the test. The
materials inside their head, it just doesn’t want to come out. The student does
poorly at test time and this not only affects the child’s self-image, it affects
how the child is viewed by his or her teachers.

You may be aware of the story of how a school district took
a group of poorly performing students and told the teacher they were the gifted
class. The teacher treated them as if they were gifted and they became the top
performing class at that school. If a child develops test anxiety and the
teacher believes that the student is less intelligent that she actually is then
how do you think the teacher will subconsciously treat the student? The time
to deal with test anxiety is when the child is young and before it has a
negative effect on their classroom activities and their self-esteem.

If left to fester, anxiety can turn into a full blown fear
which may forever negatively impact a student’s academic life and beyond. I’ve
worked with middle aged adults who developed tests anxiety as a child and now
have such a fear of examines that it limits their career choices. Think about
how many professions have licensing exams today. For children, the anxiety can
quickly be overcome before it has a negative impact on them. Adults can also
overcome their fear and eliminate test anxiety.

What about study habits? Can hypnosis help here? Yes.
Hypnosis can teach the student how to quiet their mind so that they can better
concentrate on the course material. In today’s world of text messaging, instant
messaging, brother and sisters running about the home; the student’s ability to
concentrate is taxed to the extreme. Every edge a student has to improve
concentration and block out distractions helps improve their academic
performance.

Finally, there is evidence that a student who is in a light
state of self-hypnosis has the ability to learn quicker than a student at a
normal state of consciousness. Imagine being able to learn more information in
less time. That’s something everyone can use!

So as the school year begins, think about how you or
someone you know can gain an academic advantage through hypnosis. It may just
be the best educational value out there today.
