Screams can often be heard coming from the delivery suite and discussions afterwards about labour, seems to dwell on the negative sides of stitches, the long process to meet their child and emergency deliveries.

But, giving birth doesn’t have to be as dramatic as this and more modern mums are turning to hypnosis during labour as an unconventional way to reduce pain.

At first glance, the scene unfolding around Philippa Plaisted as she lay on the operating table appeared completely in keeping with the setting. To her left stood the surgeon, masked and gowned, with his scalpel raised in the air in readiness. In front of her was the nurse, ready to swab and clean after the first incision.

And to her right, seated within touching distance, a third figure could be made out. The anaesthetist? The likely answer. But not so in this extraordinary operation.

For Charles Montagu is a hypnotherapist and Philippa his patient. For the next 40 minutes he would sit by her side. Every so often, he would talk to her in his rich, reassuring voice and use his thumb to apply pressure between her eyes

The path is an alternative—but promising—one: hypnosis.

Combined with group psychotherapy sessions, self-hypnosis in breast cancer patients dealing with pain helped the women control their pain levels much better over time, the research showed.

Their pain increased “significantly less,” in fact.

A month before the Vancouver Olympics, short track speedskater Katherine Reutter was physically ready for the most important competition of her athletic life.

“As long as I’m on that day,” Reutter said of her first-ever race at the Olympics, “there’s no one that can straight-up beat me. They’re going to have to take it away from me.”

Moments later, as Reutter sat rinkside at the 2002 Olympic speedskating oval in Kearns, Utah, her confidence about physical readiness and ability was betrayed by uncertainty.

“But what if I get to the games and it turns out I really should have lifted a bit heavier? Or I should have eaten better? [Or] I should have gotten my start faster?” Reutter said. “What if I did something wrong and I’m not going to know until I get there and it’s going to be too late to fix it?”

Reutter and the other members of the U.S. Olympic speedskating team don’t have to suffer self-doubt alone. They had a “mental coach” to turn to before the Olympics. And University of Utah sports psychologist Nicole Detling Miller is with the skaters in Vancouver as they train and compete.

In the Browns jubilant locker room after a big 31-20 playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys in 1968, Clark motioned me over. I was working the room, getting quotes for my sidebar story in The Plain Dealer.

Smokers and nonsmokers will usually agree that cigarettes are expensive, stain fingers and make hair smell bad.

More sobering, there are 443,000 tobacco-related deaths in America each year, according to the American Lung Association. This includes almost 50,000 deaths related to secondhand smoke (due to causes such as lung cancer and heart disease) and more than 700 residential fire deaths per year connected to cigarettes.

But kicking the habit can be nearly impossible for some; nicotine is more addictive even than cocaine and heroin, researchers have found.

The good news is, quitting is possible. Prescription medications, over-the-counter nicotine patches and nondrug interventions such as group therapy and hypnosis all have varying rates of success. What’s clear is that the more support you have, the better your chances.

Robin Goldman, 53, from Sun City Center, had tried to quit many times.

Then last September, with her sister in tow, she attended a hospital seminar where she underwent group hypnosis and learned she had the power to quit all along.

Here is her success story.
